The Law of 3s: Step Goals
While we all understand that it’s crucial to set goals for achieving results, getting team consensus on what to focus on can be daunting. To ease this journey, let’s dive into Step Goals. What exactly are they, and why do they play a crucial role in realizing your three year Big Goals?
What is a Step Goal?
A Step Goal is a quantitative, measurable ‘line in the sand’ that, if executed, will create meaningful momentum toward realization of theBig Goal. They are the building blocks that construct your path to success.
The Characteristics of Excellent Step Goals
Step Goals are crucial for several reasons:
- They break complex Big Goals down into manageable pieces, providing clarity and direction.
- They allow you to measure progress and create accountabilities.
- They concentrate efforts on essential tasks, preventing resource dilution.
But before you begin selecting your Step Goals, it’s crucial to understand their characteristics. Step Goals should be:
- Achievable in a Year: Step Goals should be reachable within a one-year timeframe, ensuring consistent progress toward the Big Goal.
- Limited in to Three: Each Big Goal should have no more than three Step Goals. You want to do it all, but you can’t. Sticking to three will ensure you are maintaining achievable targets to drive the organization forward.
- Clear Ownership: Unambiguous ownership on each of the Step Goals is essential. Nothing drives momentum like seeing actual owners identified for each of the Step Goals. Owners don’t necessarily do all the work, but they act as the Step Goal quarterback, calling the plays, pulling in the right players, and being accountable for results.
In the end, Step Goals bridge the gap between your Big Goals and the thing you do in the next day, month, year. Step Goals bring clarity, focus, and accountability to your journey. With the clear ownership of goals and a one-year outlook, you can turn your biggest dreams into an achievable reality.
